The "Chore Coat" is perhaps the most iconic workwear garment when it comes to classic work clothes that have become a staple in the men’s fashion industry.

The jacket originated in France, where a few early manufacturers in the early 1900s produced the classic blue chore coat as a durable option for all workers, known as "bleu de travail." Later, Americans created their own version of the jacket, with Carhartt becoming perhaps the most recognised version.

Today, it serves as the perfect mid-season jacket, suitable for various weather conditions and occasions. It pairs well with more rugged garments like carpenter pants or denim and a sturdier pair of boots. For a more balanced look, you can mix it with a knitted garment to tone down the workwear style while still maintaining that retro feel.

A classic army shirt made from a heavier cotton fabric, also known as "sateen". The fabric develops a fine patina over time. With its roots in the U.S. military, this garment has become a must-have in everyone's wardrobe.

This particular overshirt from Orslow is designed to be tucked in, as it's a reproduction of a 1960s original. However, it works just as well as an untucked overshirt. It’s a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down, but we think it looks best when mixed with something like suede penny loafers and jeans, perhaps with a knit underneath to create a subtle "clash".

Knitwear is always a great investment for autumn and winter, and why not add some fun with a luxurious chevron-patterned mohair cardigan? A typical Beams piece, it combines an elegant feel with a slightly bolder pattern.

Another classic, timeless workwear jacket is the so-called US Navy N-1 deck jacket. This RRL jacket is a variation of the N-1, made from a durable, high-quality fabric that has been washed down to create an uneven, authentic texture.
