Without jeans, a man’s wardrobe is lacking one of its most basic and versatile components. It’s hard to know where to start when describing the almost innumerable uses for this kind of trouser. It is however important to remember that jeans were once considered workwear. They were created for labourers working in particularly harsh conditions. During the American Gold Rush, miners wore denim trousers reinforced with copper rivets to make them even more durable and hard-wearing. Across the globe, labourers and craftsmen can still be seen working in denim trousers.

For everyday wear, medium-blue jeans with a slight tint, though not ripped or distressed, are one of the most suitable types of jeans. Darker jeans in unwashed denim provide a more formal look. For a sombre, smart-casual look, try a fully colour-matched combination of unwashed denim, navy-blue blazer, navy-blue shirt or polo shirt, dark blue leather or suede shoes and a matching belt. Considering the current trend for body-hugging jeans, it is a good idea to make sure your jeans aren’t too tight around the knee, even if they have a slim or skinny fit over the thigh and calf. If you are having difficulty finding jeans that are wide enough to accommodate your thighs without been too wide at the waist, try a pair that incorporate stretch fabric.
