About Monaco
Born as the "Heuer Monaco", the Tag Heuer Monaco represents one of the watch world's more unique designs. Designed by Jack Heuer himself, the model is the fruit of many influential events in the watch world at the time of its birth. Heuer had developed the formidable Chronomatic/Calibre 11 automatic chronograph movement in 1969 via his "Project 99", which was ground breaking at the time. Seiko and Zenith were also in the process of launching similar movements, so Heuer wanted to make an even bigger impact and put the movement in a completely new watch model.
The rectangular case developed in collaboration with Swiss case maker Erwin Piquerez, water resistant to 100 metres, also unique in the watch world at the time. In 1971, the foundations for the greatness of the Tag Heuer Monaco were laid when Jack Heuer signed a commercial agreement with his friend and F1 driver Jo Siffert as a Heuer ambassador. When Steve McQueen then chose to wear a Heuer Monaco 1133B in the film classic "Le Mans", one of the most important marketing decisions in the watch world was made and the Tag Heuer Monaco became an eternal classic.
