From idea to finished shoe: Meet the craftsmanship behind Astorflex Stormflex

In our line of business, we surround ourselves with most of the greatest products ever made; tried, tested and refined over decades by some of the greatest existing artisans. The products have become timeless, classic staples, evergreens appreciated through generations and re-purchased over and over again. The desert boot is a great example, and one of the most beloved such that we carry is made by Astorflex, an Italian family company based outside Mantova who’s been operating since 1820.

Ever since we introduced them in our store, their shoes have been an absolute favorite among our customers. The shoes are simple and honest – it’s a beautiful, classic silhouette, refined and made by hand by expert craftsmen purely in organic, quality materials and components. It’s still an independent family company, run by the Travenzoli family who holds one of the longest track records of producing quality footwear in the world, and is generally a company founded on strong values and great respect for the environment, inside the company as well as outside, taking care of their workers like family while manufacturing fully organic products in and old-school and thus very sustainable way. What’s not to like?

We wanted to work even closer with them, but we don’t assume we can make a better shoe than a producer, especially a specialist like Astorflex who’s been in the business for more than 200 years. We decided to collaborate on this exclusive model, which is based on their existing, expertly crafted range of models, but with a unique customization that we desired to make to meet the needs and demands of our customers who put their shoes to the test in many different and challenging conditions. Together with sixth-generation owner, Fabio Travenzoli, we sought to elevate the shoe, without changing or compromising design or function, but making it even more durable and resistant in the various environments in which it is likely to perform.

How Astorflex Stormflex is Made in the Factory

Through thorough research and careful experimentation in collaboration an Italian tannery, they successfully developed a suede material with a natural membrane which results in a water resistant material. This unique suede upper and crepe outsole, which is naturally resistant to water, would provide the two main components needed to create a weather- and water resistant shoe. A natural resin coating is applied to seal the seams and keep water from entering.

We are proud of the result – an elevated classic, created with respect for the past, built for the needs of today and made to last many future years.
