Like many other unique watch designs, the Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso was born out of a practical need. In 1930, businessman and devoted horse polo player César de Trey found it difficult to find watches suitable for the sometimes harsh conditions his wristwatches were subjected to during polo games. He turned to his good friend Jacques-David LeCoultre with an ingenious idea for a case that could be partially reversed, with the durable back case taking the place of the glass and dial. Together they enlisted engineer René-Alfred Chauvot to design the watch that became the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, one of the most unique and recognisable watch models in the watch world.
Over the years, the Reverso has housed more than 50 different calibres of movements, all made in-house at Jaeger-LeCoultre's Vallée de Joux factory with expertise since 1833. It comes in a plethora of different sizes, case materials, complications and dials. It is very popular to engrave on the back case a message or symbolism personalised to the owner of the watch. A not engraved Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is thus highly sought after on the second-hand market.
