Merz B. Schwanen – when basics take center stage

Merz B. Schwanen was founded in 1911 in Germany by Balthazar Merz and began as a manufacturer of underwear and work-related basics. Early on, the focus was on function, durability, and comfort – garments designed to withstand everyday use and long working hours.
After a period of dormancy, the brand was revived in the early 2010s by a couple who discovered a 90-year-old henley, with the ambition to recreate the same quality and manufacturing methods that once laid the foundation for the name.
A brand rooted in industrial history
A significant part of the production still takes place on vintage circular knitting machines, which means that many garments lack side seams. The result is a natural fit, high comfort, and pieces that maintain their shape over time. The materials are well-considered – often organic cotton – and the fabrics are dense without feeling stiff.
The Essentials that Define Merz B. Schwanen
The brand is perhaps best known for its t-shirts, henleys, sweatshirts, and long-sleeve tops. The silhouettes are straight, the color palette subdued, and the details minimal. These are pieces that serve as the foundation of a wardrobe, rather than as temporary additions. For this reason, they are well-suited for layering and can be worn year after year. The robust 215 looped wheeled t-shirt, for example, can be seen in the TV series The Bear.
A style for the long-term
Merz B. Schwanen appeals to those who value longevity over the allure of novelty. There is no excess and no fleeting trends here – just well-crafted essentials with a clear purpose and an expression that ages with dignity.
