The inspiration for journalist Gay Talese's seminary biography came in 1965 after flying to Los Angeles to interview Sinatra, who had had to cancel at the last minute due to falling ill. While waiting for him to recover, Talese chose instead to interview the singer's friends, family, and acquaintances. A new and unique portrait of Sinatra began to take form, one which was to become a celebrated addition to the genre, despite no interview with Sinatra himself ever taking place.
