On the other hand, there are watches that simply offer the most basic and useful complications: time and date. One such exemplary watch is the Rolex Datejust.

History

While the Datejust may not be the best known Rolex, nor selling for six-figure sums at auction, it can be argued that no other watch has been more instrumental in the long-term success of Rolex than the unassuming but beloved Datejust. For almost three quarters of a century, the Datejust has served as the mainstay of the Rolex range, and for many people, a Rolex Datejust is the only watch they will ever need.

Launched in 1945 to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary, the Datejust is one of the oldest models that Rolex still produces to this day. Originally, the first Datejust models had a case size of 36mm, today the model is manufactured in everything from 31mm up to 41mm.

Although date display is now something, we expect on most modern watches, the Rolex Datejust was the very first self-winding watch in the world with a date window that automatically changed the date at midnight. Although this feature may now seem standard, it was the Datejust that set a new precedent for how a date complication on a watch should work.

Which Datejust should I choose?

There are a plethora of options when it comes to Datejust watches. You can choose between different types of straps such as Oyster or Jubilee links, smooth or fluted bezel, as well as Roman or Arabic numerals. The possibilities are almost endless. Rolex Datejust reference 1603 (late 50s to early 80s)

Since this model was made only in stainless steel, you can still find examples in good condition at reasonable prices.
Keep in mind: While these watches can still be relatively affordable, you should be aware that older vintage watches are usually more sensitive. Their Plexiglas rarely offers a waterproof guarantee, and the strap can sometimes feel light and a little clunky. Otherwise, an excellent watch that fits into most occasions.

Rolex Datejust reference 16200 (mid 90s to mid 2000s)

This is a model that we highly recommend if you are looking for a watch that can be used at any occasion and that can withstand the wear & tear of everyday life. The scratch-free sapphire crystal and the modern screw-down links give the watch the perfect balance between modernity and vintage feel.
Keep in mind: As the prices of these '90s 'neo-vintage' watches are getting higher and higher, now is a great time to start searching for your favourite model. Just make sure to find one in good condition.

Rolex Datejust reference 116200 (2004-2019)

This is a more modern update of the previous reference, the 16200. It now has more modern and solid screw links, which creates a more reliable watch than its predecessors.
Keep in mind: The wide range of different dials combined with the choice of Oyster or Jubilee links gives the Datejust 116200 many different styles to choose from, and it's easy to find a model that suits your taste.
