Wild

Wild tells the story of Cheryl Strayed, expertly portrayed by Reese Witherspoon, as the unexperienced adventurer takes on the USA’s 4 300 kilometre long Pacific Crest Trail. This inspirational story of overcoming obstacles both physical and psychological is based on Strayed’s autobiography Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. Ideal inspiration for anyone thinking of embarking on a hiking or camping trip.

Kon-Tiki

The film Kon-Tiki tells the story of the legendary raft that took Thor Heyerdahl and his crew across the Pacific Ocean in 1947. Hoping to prove that South Americans made it to Polynesia by crossing the ocean, they set out on an 8,000 kilometer adventure on a balsa wood raft. Along the way, they encounter both wild sharks and devastating storms. Perhaps a somewhat radical journey to embark on in real life, but not least an adventure to be inspired by in the world of the film on a rainy autumn evening.

Everest

Everest retells the true story of a fateful day in May 1996 when two expeditions to the summit of Mount Everest are caught in a snowstorm. Having set off before sunrise in their quest to reach the top, mountaineers Scott Fisher (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) quickly find themselves beset by problems. Their tribulations only serve to prove that, when nature takes charge, anything can happen. Something to keep in mind for those planning a visit to more extreme environments.

Rushmore

Today, American director Wes Anderson’s film style is established and well-known. With symmetrically framed scenes, clear camera movements and parody characters, he has created his own niche in a world where other films look increasingly homogeneous. In Anderson’s second feature film, Rushmore, you get to see this distinctive style take its first cautious steps. The film follows 15-year-old Max Fischer, who is studying at the prestigious Rushmore Academy, where he spends most of his time neglecting his studies in favour of various student associations. After Max begins a friendship with a local industrialist while simultaneously falling in love with a clearly older elementary school teacher, everything is set up for a bizarre love triangle. Anderson’s eye for style also extends to his characters, and Max dresses throughout the film like a true preppy. If you want to copy his signature outfit, all you need to do is put on a pair of chinos, wear a striped tie around your neck and add a blazer.

Metropolitan

It’s December in the late 1980s and debutante balls are being held in New York where society youth can show off, mingle and get drunk. At the after-parties, they gather in tuxedos and ball gowns to discuss literature, politics and philosophy. At the same time, some of them are dreading a future in which failure and the reverse of the American dream, “downward social mobility”, await them. The scenes play out in front of the viewer as if plucked from a play in which all the characters are constantly in a grey area between all-out snobbery and attempts at intellectuality. The style of dress is dominated by tuxedos and evening dress, but occasionally a more casual outfit is seen, consisting of knitted sweaters, chinos and worn jackets, as if taken from a handbook of preppy style. Mimicking the style simply requires a rented tuxedo and your best philosophical musings.

A Beautiful Mind

A Beautiful Mind is the true story of Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash. The film begins in 1947, when Nash arrives at Princeton University to study mathematics. The rest of the story takes place over several decades, taking the viewer to some of America’s most prestigious east-coast universities. There we follow Nash’s fight to be recognised as a mathematician as he struggles with his mental health. A beautiful and, in many ways, inspiring story that also features plenty of style inspiration for those who like flannel, tweed and the American East Coast style. The film showcases a diverse and realistic picture of the Ivy League style, from its heyday in the 1950s through to the 1970s. If you want to dress like a young John Nash, you’ll need to invest in a subdued grey-brown colour scheme, wear a lot of knitted vests, and have the courage to bring out your bow tie whenever the opportunity arises.

The Holiday

Rom-coms and Christmas films are two genres that often collide. Add one of Jude Law’s best performances as the charming Graham, and you have a modern Christmas classic for everyone to enjoy. To prepare him for the role, director Nancy Myers sent Law a list of old Clark Gable films to watch, which may well explain how he approaches the role. His laissez-faire, British style is however the polar opposite to Gable’s classic tailored suits. With his soft, knitted jumpers, loosely knotted neckties and scarves, the character’s style is as simple as it is stylish.

Bridget Jones's Diary

After a horrendous New Year party, Bridget Jones decides to turn her life around – this year she will succeed in quitting smoking, drinking less, and finding Mr Right. What follows may not be a traditional Christmas film but contains a lot of festive celebrations. Colin Firth’s Mr Darcy has a way of creating a festive outfit that is somehow both extremely stylish and completely awful is just one of the reasons this film has a given place on our list. If you want to emulate his style, you have two options: The first is dusting off your suit and donning a Christmassy tie, preferably adorned with snowmen and reindeer. The second, which we think is the more advisable, is to throw on a heavy-knit, grey rollneck under a navy blue coat, and top it off with a casually slung grey scarf.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

A mix-up at the airport means that Kevin is once again separated from his parents just before Christmas. For Kevin, this means he needs to spend the days leading up to Christmas in New York. We follow Kevin as he tries to navigate the island of Manhattan, armed with only a credit card and a duffle coat. The film is loaded with New York romanticism, from the check-in desk of the classic Plaza Hotel to the gigantic Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Centre, and Kevins visit to FAO Schwarz, the USA’s biggest toy shop (renamed to Duncan’s Toy Chest for the film). Get comfortable on the sofa and let yourself be whisked away to a Christmas in the city that never sleeps.
