The Classics of Yesterday through Tomorrow: The Blazer of 1950 and 2050

For those of you who follow us, you are well acquainted with our focus on offering The Classics of Tomorrow – timeless garments that remain as relevant today as they will be tomorrow. With our commitment to high-quality pieces that defy time and trends, we now want to explore the future from a style perspective. Many of our garments have remained relatively unchanged over the past 60–70 years, with only subtle adjustments over time. But what will they look like 30–40 years from now? What sets future garments apart from those worn in the 1950s?

With the help of future digital tools like AI, we have created a vision of what it could look like in 2050, compared to the vibrant 1950s. Join us on a journey through the past and the future, with a focus on one true icon – the blazer.

The Blazer in the 1950s

Although the 1950s are often associated with jeans, leather jackets, and rock 'n' roll, there was, of course, also a more conservative aesthetic, particularly among the older generation or those who preferred the somewhat more respectable crooner Bing Crosby over the rebel Elvis Presley.

In the 1950s, dressed men's fashion was defined by a classic and elegant style, with blazers that were carefully tailored to emphasize the waist without being too tight. The shoulders were often padded to create a broader upper body and a narrower waist, though not as heavily padded as the broad shoulders of the 1940s. The length of the blazers was slightly longer than today’s models, providing a more traditional silhouette. Single-breasted blazers with two or three buttons were the most common, but double-breasted versions were used for more formal occasions. The colors were muted and classic—grey, brown, and dark blue—with heavy fabrics such as tweed, wool, and flannel. Accessories like ties and pocket squares were important complements, with the pocket square often matching or contrasting with the tie.

A well-dressed man in the 1950s wore his blazer with high-waisted, pleated trousers, either as part of a full suit or as a well-matched separate with a briefcase nearby. Some style icons of the 1950s' classic style included, notably, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, and singer Frank Sinatra.

The Blazer in the 2050s

Looking into the future, we believe that the blazer will continue to be a cornerstone of style, with its timeless design and ability to adapt to the needs of the times. The blazer you buy today could very well be worn 30 years from now, just as many people today wear inherited or vintage blazers from previous generations. However, as our lives become more dynamic and demanding, we will need garments that can withstand everything from temperature fluctuations to wear and tear. Therefore, we envision a future where technological innovations play a larger role, without compromising on style.

We imagine smart textiles that are self-cleaning, water-repellent, and temperature-regulating, while the blazer maintains its tailored and timeless aesthetic. Materials that are biodegradable or recycled will become the standard, and a focus on a circular economy will mean that the blazer can easily be repaired, recycled, or resold. However, the most important aspect is that quality and craftsmanship remain central – a blazer that withstands the test of time and remains relevant for decades to come.

This is, of course, entirely a thought experiment. What characteristics are enduring in a timeless garment, and which new qualities will we value in the future?

What garments do you think will become the classics of the future, and which would you like to see visualized in a future world? Let us know in the comments.

The Jacker made of beautiful material with attention to details as expected from Stone Island. The size is more of loose/oversize fits. I wear XL in Stone Island Jacket, I should have bought L! However, I love this jacket and the feel of it. Care of Carol has an exceptional customer care service and very fast shipping.
